Learn MoreWhat we tell Los Angeles parents
Woodland Hills is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, so an LA address is often close to home for us. Most of our LA calls come from the Valley side: Canoga Park, Reseda, Northridge, Tarzana. The question we hear most is simple: is it safe to light the fireplace with the kids in the room? The 1994 Northridge earthquake was centered in the Valley, and many chimneys that came through it were patched, never checked inside. A cracked flue tile can let smoke and carbon monoxide into the house without anyone seeing it. If the fireplace smokes or the alarm has chirped, a camera inspection comes first.
Check at Home
If the room smells of smoke the next morning, or the alarm chirps when the fire is lit, stop using the fireplace and call. Keep the damper open until the ashes are cold.
Kids and Pets
A smoky fireplace affects small children and pets first because they are closer to the floor where cooler smoke can settle. We find out why it smokes before anything else.
What We Look At First
A camera up any older brick flue, looking for patched cracks from the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
