Learn MoreWhat we tell Malibu parents
After Woolsey and Palisades, many rebuilt Malibu homes skipped wood-burning masonry for a modern gas fireplace. A hot glass front is a different hazard from a smoky flue, and a family moving into a new house here needs the barrier screen in place. Two fires, Woolsey and then Palisades in early 2025, took a heavy toll on homes here. Metal caps and screws corrode in the spray, wind tests what is loose, and the Malibu Coast Fault runs along the shore.
Check at Home
After any cleaning of a gas unit, check that the mesh barrier went back on, and keep the remote somewhere little hands cannot reach.
Kids and Pets
A dog lying against hot glass may not move away in time, so show the family where the heat ends and set a bed past it.
What We Look At First
Barrier screens on rebuilt gas units, and salt damage to caps on older houses.
