A Tujunga Village Homeowner's Gas Log Conversion That Almost Went Wrong

Last fall, a homeowner on a quiet street behind Tujunga Village called us about converting her wood-burning fireplace to gas logs. She'd stopped burning wood years ago after the AQMD no-burn days became more frequent, and the old masonry firebox was collecting dust. She liked the idea of a gas insert for occasional evening use, maybe fifteen times a season. But when she had a contractor out to quote the gas line, he noticed crumbling mortar joints inside the firebox and told her to get the chimney looked at before anyone touched the flue. That's when she reached us.

Her situation is common along the Ventura Boulevard flats and the surrounding residential blocks. These homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s with single-wythe brick chimneys and clay tile flue liners. Decades of mild seismic activity have left hairline cracks in the tile liner that you can't see without a camera inspection. If you drop a gas insert into that kind of flue without addressing the liner, you risk carbon monoxide leaking through those cracks into wall cavities. She was right to pause. The real question was whether her existing masonry could support a modern insert at all, or whether the chimney needed relining first. We scheduled a Level 2 inspection for the following week.

What a Level 2 Camera Scan Revealed Inside a 1960s Clay Tile Flue

Our technician ran a camera scan through the full length of her flue, following NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection standards. The results confirmed what the contractor suspected. Two clay tile sections in the mid-flue had shifted at their joints, leaving gaps of roughly a quarter inch. There was also 2nd-degree creosote buildup from her old wood-burning days clinging to the tile walls. None of this was visible from the firebox or the rooftop. For a wood-to-gas-log conversion in masonry like this, the fix is a continuous stainless steel liner sized to the BTU rating of the gas insert. The liner bypasses the cracked clay tiles entirely and gives the insert a sealed, code-compliant exhaust path.

We installed a direct-vent gas insert with an efficiency rating above 70%, paired with a properly sized stainless liner that runs from the insert collar to the chimney crown. The Moorpark Street corridor and surrounding blocks have dozens of chimneys with this same 1960s construction, and the conversion process follows the same logic each time: inspect the flue with a camera, assess the masonry condition, and reline before the insert goes in. If you're considering a gas insert or even an EPA-certified wood insert, your flue liner is the first thing that needs evaluation. A chimney inspection is the place to start, and we can walk you through what your specific chimney needs.

Fireplace Inserts in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills is where Family Home Chimney Experts is based, and a lot of the houses here were bought for the yard and the family room. That family room usually has the fireplace in it, which means toddlers walking past the hearth, dogs napping on it, and a fire most cold weekends. We check the screen and the hearth edge with that in mind.

Fireplace Inserts in Encino

Encino lots are big enough that a family may have a living room fireplace, a den fireplace and an outdoor fire feature where the kids roast marshmallows. We go through each one, and the list we leave says which one is fine for tonight and which one should wait.

Fireplace Inserts in Simi Valley

Simi Valley is a short drive over the pass from Woodland Hills. Plenty of the tract houses here have a factory-built fireplace that has been in the family room since the house went up, and families with young kids often add a gas insert. We check the glass barrier on any insert and the clearances around the old box.

Fireplace Inserts in Sherman Oaks

In Sherman Oaks we see a lot of prefab fireplaces in houses that families have remodeled around. A new hearth or built-in shelving can crowd the clearances the fireplace was made with. We measure what sits near the opening, and the list tells you if a toy bin or a dog bed is too close.

Fireplace Inserts in Burbank

Burbank is across the Valley from us. Many homes here have a factory-built fireplace from the 1940s to the 1960s, and replacement parts have to match that unit. A missing glass door or a bent screen frame is a real safety problem in a house with small kids, not only a looks problem.

Fireplace Inserts in Studio City

Studio City is east of us along Ventura Boulevard. Many houses here still have their original brick fireplace from the 1940s to the 1960s, often with an old folding screen that no longer closes all the way. A gap at the bottom of a screen is where a spark lands on the rug, or a curious cat gets in.
