Wood Stove Repair in Studio City: Written Report, Licensed Technicians

Last winter a homeowner on a quiet street near Tujunga Village called us about smoke leaking from the front of their wood stove. The stove had been installed a few years earlier inside a masonry fireplace that originally ran gas logs. They'd had the gas line capped and a wood stove insert fitted into the old firebox, but no one had addressed the masonry itself during the conversion. The door gasket had gone soft and flat, letting smoke curl out around the loading door every time they burned. The door gasket failure was the obvious symptom, but it pointed to a bigger question: was the masonry conversion done to a standard that could safely contain a wood fire long-term?

We started with a CSIA-standard Level 2 inspection, which includes a camera scan of the full flue interior. The original clay liner had two vertical cracks running through the lower third, right where heat stress from the wood stove was most concentrated. Three firebricks inside the stove's firebox had split and shifted, exposing the steel body behind them to direct flame contact. The catalytic combustor, which the homeowner didn't realize needed periodic service, was 60 percent blocked withite ash and creosote residue. The baffle plate had warped slightly from sustained high-temperature burns. None of these problems would have developed with a properly lined masonry conversion and routine maintenance, but together they created real risk: a cracked flue with no secondary containment and a stove running hotter than its components could manage.

We replaced all damaged firebricks, installed a new door gasket rated for the stove's make and model, and swapped out the warped baffle plate. We cleaned and tested the catalytic combustor, which still had usable life once the blockage was cleared. For the flue, we recommended a stainless steel liner sized to the stove's output, which meets NFPA 211 requirements for solid-fuel appliances in masonry chimneys. The homeowner scheduled a chimney sweep before the relining so we could remove second-degree creosote deposits from the existing clay tile. After the work, the stove drew correctly, the door sealed tight, and the combustor lit off at the right temperature.
