Learn MoreWhat we tell Studio City parents
Studio City is east of us along Ventura Boulevard. Many houses here still have their original brick fireplace from the 1940s to the 1960s, often with an old folding screen that no longer closes all the way. A gap at the bottom of a screen is where a spark lands on the rug, or a curious cat gets in. Hot afternoons and cool canyon evenings work on older mortar every day. We check the joints and the crown in early fall, before the first fire, so a parent knows whether the fireplace is ready for the season.
Check at Home
Close the screen and look along the bottom edge. If you can slide a finger under it, a spark can get out and a cat can get in. Check that the doors latch on any glass enclosure.
Kids and Pets
Old screens with loose mesh can catch small fingers. We tell you whether the screen can be fixed or should be replaced with one that fits the opening.
What We Look At First
The screen and the hearth extension, then the mortar joints and crown on older brick.
Next Door
We also take calls from Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake, Valley Village.
