What's Included
Most fireplace repairs show up in an inspection report before you'd ever notice them yourself. A hairline crack in the refractory, a damper just starting to warp, a little wear on the smoke shelf mortar: catch it early and it costs a lot less to fix. We work Woodland Hills and San Fernando & Conejo Valley. We use the right materials for the job and document what we did.
A Tujunga Village Homeowner's Gas Log Conversion That Almost Went Sideways
A homeowner on a quiet side street off Tujunga Village called us last winter after buying a gas log set online and hiring a handyman to install it inside a 1950s masonry firebox. Within two weeks, the mortar joints behind the gas burner started flaking. Chunks of old refractory panel had crumbled onto the firebox floor, and the homeowner could see hairline cracks running up the back wall of the firebox. She wasn't sure whether this was cosmetic wear or a genuine hazard, but the smell of hot dust every time the gas logs ran made her nervous enough to shut the unit off and call us.
This is one of the most common calls we get from the Ventura Boulevard flats and the Moorpark Street corridor. Older masonry fireboxes in Studio City were built for wood fires. The firebrick and refractory panels in these units handled radiant heat from burning logs, but a gas log burner concentrates heat differently. It pushes sustained, focused flame against the same spot on the back panel for hours. When a firebox already has earthquake micro-cracks or 70 years of thermal cycling behind it, a gas log conversion can accelerate failure fast. Before converting any masonry firebox to gas logs, the firebox itself needs to be evaluated, not just the gas line.
What a Firebox Rebuild and Damper Swap Actually Looks Like for a Gas Log Conversion
When we inspected that Tujunga Village fireplace, the Level 2 camera scan (required under NFPA 211 anytime the appliance type changes) confirmed what we suspected. The original refractory panels were cracked through in three places, and the throat damper was rusted partially open and could no longer seal. For a gas log conversion on a masonry firebox like this, we replaced all four refractory panels with panels rated for continuous gas flame exposure. We also removed the corroded throat damper and installed a top-mount damper with a silicone seal, which gives a much tighter closure when the fireplace isn't running. That single change cut her heating loss through the flue significantly. A full firebox rebuild would have been necessary if the firebrick behind the panels had deteriorated, but in this case the brick was intact, so panel replacement and the damper swap were enough.
The distinction between refractory panel replacement and a full firebox rebuild matters for your budget and your timeline. Panel replacement on a structurally sound firebox takes one visit. A full rebuild, where we strip the firebox to bare masonry and relay firebrick, takes two to three days and costs roughly double. We see both regularly along the Moorpark Street corridor, where post-war ranch homes share similar construction. Every gas log conversion we handle starts with an inspection and a fireplace cleaning so we can see the true condition of the masonry before recommending either path. If your firebox passes, conversion is straightforward. If it doesn't, you'll know exactly why and what it costs to fix.

Fireplace Repair in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills is where Family Home Chimney Experts is based, and a lot of the houses here were bought for the yard and the family room. That family room usually has the fireplace in it, which means toddlers walking past the hearth, dogs napping on it, and a fire most cold weekends. We check the screen and the hearth edge with that in mind.

Fireplace Repair in Encino
Encino lots are big enough that a family may have a living room fireplace, a den fireplace and an outdoor fire feature where the kids roast marshmallows. We go through each one, and the list we leave says which one is fine for tonight and which one should wait.

Fireplace Repair in Simi Valley
Simi Valley is a short drive over the pass from Woodland Hills. Plenty of the tract houses here have a factory-built fireplace that has been in the family room since the house went up, and families with young kids often add a gas insert. We check the glass barrier on any insert and the clearances around the old box.

Fireplace Repair in Sherman Oaks
In Sherman Oaks we see a lot of prefab fireplaces in houses that families have remodeled around. A new hearth or built-in shelving can crowd the clearances the fireplace was made with. We measure what sits near the opening, and the list tells you if a toy bin or a dog bed is too close.

Fireplace Repair in Burbank
Burbank is across the Valley from us. Many homes here have a factory-built fireplace from the 1940s to the 1960s, and replacement parts have to match that unit. A missing glass door or a bent screen frame is a real safety problem in a house with small kids, not only a looks problem.

Fireplace Repair in Studio City
Studio City is east of us along Ventura Boulevard. Many houses here still have their original brick fireplace from the 1940s to the 1960s, often with an old folding screen that no longer closes all the way. A gap at the bottom of a screen is where a spark lands on the rug, or a curious cat gets in.
