Fireplace Cleaning in Studio City - Deep Clean with Safety Check

A homeowner on a quiet street off Tujunga Village called us last January after noticing a chalky white residue spreading across the inside of her firebox. She'd switched from wood-burning to gas logs about three years earlier, and the installer told her the old masonry firebox was fine to keep using. It looked fine at first. But over three seasons of occasional use, mineral deposits from the gas combustion had bonded to the original firebrick, and old wood-burning soot underneath was flaking off in sheets. She could smell something stale every time the heater kicked on, even with the fireplace off. She wanted to know if the whole firebox needed replacing or if a proper deep cleaning could save it.

Her situation is common along the Ventura Boulevard flats and the Moorpark Street corridor, where ranch homes and mid-century splits from the 1950s and 1960s were built with wood-burning masonry fireboxes that owners later converted to gas logs. The conversion changes the combustion chemistry but rarely includes any update to the firebox itself. Calcium sulfate deposits layer over decades of old creosote. Smoke stains bake into porous brick. Ash from the wood-burning days compacts into corners the gas flames never reach. What looks like a clean fireplace often has three layers of residue you can't see until someone scrapes the surface. That's exactly what we found when we showed up with our inspection camera.

We started with a Level 1 inspection under NFPA 211 guidelines. The flue was in decent shape, but the firebox told a different story. Under the gas log sand and lava rock, we found compacted hardwood ash from before the conversion, about a quarter inch deep across the entire floor. The firebrick walls had a sandwich of old second-degree creosote covered by a newer film of calcium and sodium deposits from the gas burner. We removed the gas log set, vacuumed and scraped the firebox floor down to bare firebrick, then used a chemical treatment rated for calcium-over-creosote removal on the walls. The hearth stone, a slab of Arizona flagstone original to the house, got a pH-neutral scrub to pull out smoke staining without etching the surface.

After cleaning, we inspected the mortar joints between the firebrick panels. Two joints along the back wall had hairline separations, common in this area after decades of minor seismic movement. We repointed them with refractory mortar rated for gas appliance temperatures. The homeowner got her fireplace back in service that same afternoon, with a clean firebox that actually matched her gas log setup for the first time since the conversion.
